Save Machine

Posted in installations, student work by tilmanrichter on August 20, 2008

Omnipresent surveillance is a situation we will have to cope with in the future. Emerging technologies like cellspaces for mobile phones, GPS and RFID – just to name a few – make our brave new world much comfortable and saver. At the same time we will become easier to monitor. I am interested in the behavioral change of people aware of this situation. In this case, in an art exhibition.

Saving Everybody is an installation in two rooms. Two steles, one on the first floor, the other on the third. When visitors entered the object took an image. This image was sent to the third floor, and printed out.

The blank design of the machine enables the visitor to develope his own interpretation about function and meaning of the machine, about a machine that is saving everybody.

The machine saved over 3,000 images, some 120 meters of imagery were printed over the time of the exhibition. A pile of personal information.

Tangible Networks

Posted in Information, installations, student work, temporary architecture by tilmanrichter on August 20, 2008

For the HfK University of the Arts, Bremen we designed and produced an interactive media installation. 300 of 900 students of HfK are from all over the world. There is a vivid network of partnerships and exchanges between universities and course of studies. HfK claims to be „international, interdisziplinary and integrative“ thats why 3iarts.

The base of the installation is a website on wich students of universities of the arts can upload and show their work online. Some use it as their online portolio.

With an interactive table and postcards from the corresponding cities the students of HfK can see what artist, designers, digital media and music students are doing all over the world. They can interface with the galleries by moving and rotating the postcards.

You can visit the website at www.3iarts.net

Some of our cities public spaces have become a clinical environment. Everybody is a stranger. Social barriers and suspiciousness keep a distance to the other people.

Ensemle is a mobile multiplayer game similar to the computer game classic Pacman. It is designed for public busses, streetcars, trams and subways.

When downloaded, the game you can be played everywhere. Everybody can playwith you. For the time of the ride.

This way we try to connect the people on another level.

We hope that Ensemble sets up a “digital” level above the

“anaolog” social barriers and suspiciousness.

Electronic devices have simplified our life. But they use masses of energy that we have lost relation to. We have power outlets everywhere, and we use them, with little awareness about costs.

We have to see the invisible energy to become aware of it, to find the places of most energy consumption.

See Energy is an energy monitoring device. It reads electromagnetic fields in its proximity, and converts the energy value to energy cost.

Although it lacks accuracy – wich could be enhanced with more complex  technology – this device could be a way to make people aware of electricity presence and costs.
